FAQs of Desk Lamps
How bright should a desk lamp be for reading or work?
A desk lamp should provide 450 to 800 lumens for close work like reading or writing, positioned about 12 to 18 inches from the work surface. Detailed tasks or aging eyes may benefit from the higher end of that range, closer to 800 to 1,000 lumens.
What's the benefit of an adjustable-arm desk lamp over a fixed one?
An adjustable arm lets you redirect light precisely onto your work surface or angle it away from a screen to reduce glare, which a fixed-position lamp can't replicate. This flexibility matters most if the desk serves multiple tasks, like reading, writing, and computer work, that each benefit from different light angles.
How do I position a desk lamp to avoid screen glare?
Angle the lamp to the side of your screen rather than directly behind or in front of it, and avoid pointing the light source at a reflective monitor surface. A lamp positioned to illuminate your keyboard and desk area, rather than the screen itself, generally minimizes glare.
What color temperature is best for a desk lamp used for computer work?
A neutral white in the 4000K to 5000K range reduces eye strain during screen-heavy work better than very warm or very cool extremes. If you also use the desk for reading physical documents, a slightly warmer 3500K to 4000K range works well for both tasks.
Are desk lamps with a USB charging port worth prioritizing?
Yes, a built-in USB port lets you charge a phone or tablet directly at the lamp without needing a separate outlet or charging block, which is convenient in a workspace already crowded with cables. This is a minor feature but adds real day-to-day convenience for a desk used regularly.
Can a desk lamp double as ambient lighting when not in task-use mode?
Some desk lamps with adjustable brightness or a diffused shade can provide softer ambient light when dimmed, rather than only sharp task lighting. Fully directional or exposed-bulb designs are less suited to this dual purpose, since they're built specifically to focus light in one direction.
Is a clamp-mount or weighted-base desk lamp better for a small desk?
A clamp-mount lamp attaches directly to the desk's edge, freeing up surface space entirely, which is useful on smaller or cluttered desks. A weighted base offers more flexibility to reposition the lamp anywhere on the surface but takes up a small footprint of its own.
Do desk lamps require assembly?
Most desk lamps arrive mostly assembled, typically requiring only the shade or head to be attached and a bulb installed, taking 5 to 10 minutes. Multi-jointed adjustable-arm lamps may need the arm sections connected, adding a few extra minutes to setup.
