FAQs of Table & Floor Lamps
What's the difference between a table lamp and a floor lamp for a living room?
A table lamp sits on a surface like a console or side table and provides focused, lower-level light, while a floor lamp stands independently and can illuminate a larger area or reach higher for more ambient light. Floor lamps work well in rooms without enough surface space, while table lamps pair naturally with existing furniture.
How do I choose the right lamp size for a side table?
The lamp, including its shade, should generally be about 1.5 times the height of the table it sits on, keeping the light source at a comfortable seated eye level. A lamp that's too tall or too short relative to the table disrupts the room's visual proportions.
What bulb wattage or lumens do I need for a reading lamp?
A reading lamp works best with 450 to 800 lumens, roughly equivalent to a 40 to 60 watt incandescent bulb, positioned close enough to avoid shadows falling across the page. Check the lamp's maximum wattage rating before installing a bulb, since exceeding it can damage the fixture or pose a fire risk.
Are dimmable lamps compatible with any bulb?
No, the bulb itself must be labeled dimmable, since standard non-dimmable LED bulbs can flicker or fail to dim smoothly even in a dimmer-compatible lamp. Pairing a dimmable lamp with a dimmable bulb gives the most reliable, flicker-free results.
What's the benefit of a lamp with a fabric shade versus a glass or metal shade?
A fabric shade diffuses light more softly and evenly, reducing glare, which suits reading or ambient lighting in a living room or bedroom. Glass and metal shades direct light more precisely and often add a sculptural, decorative element, but can produce more direct glare if the bulb isn't shielded.
Can a floor lamp double as a room's primary light source?
A tall floor lamp with an upward-facing or torchiere-style shade can bounce enough light off the ceiling to serve as ambient lighting for a small to mid-size room. For larger rooms, pairing a floor lamp with additional ceiling or accent lighting provides more balanced overall brightness.
How do I keep lamp cords tidy and out of the way?
Route cords along the baseboard using adhesive cord clips, or behind furniture where possible, to avoid a tripping hazard or visual clutter. Lamps positioned near an existing outlet minimize how much cord is left exposed in the first place.
Do table and floor lamps require assembly?
Most lamps arrive mostly assembled, typically requiring only the shade to be attached and a bulb installed, taking 5 to 10 minutes. Taller or multi-arm floor lamps may include a few additional steps to secure the base and adjust arm positioning.
